Paul Valery once remarked that "A businessman is a cross between a dancer and a calculator." We may laugh at the statement, but many of us recognize that this describes our lives. We live in a world of constant pressure, change, and stress, where we find ourselves working hard, trying to balance work, family, and life. In working with men for over twenty years, I have observed that often men passionately pursue financial goals, while other areas of their lives are being neglected, or at least put on the back- burner.
In this fast-paced age that we live in, the late Peter Drucker made this profound statement about the challenge for business professionals in our day: "In a few hundred years, when the history of our time will be written from a long-term perspective, I think that it is very probable that the most important event these historians will see is not technology, it is not the Internet, it is not e-commerce. It is an unprecedented change in the human condition. For the first time-and I mean that literally-substantial and rapidly growing numbers of people have choices. For the first time, they will have to manage themselves."
The primary reason I began FinishingWell a few years ago was because I have regularly observed good men - often men who are part of a vibrant community of faith - who nevertheless have no one to personally encourage and challenge them. Too often, business professionals are valued almost solely for their financial support of the religious institution, while their own personal and spiritual needs go unmet. There is simply no one available, or capable, of truly hearing about the challenges they face, to simply "listen" to their story in confidence, so that they might come to a greater understanding of the "big picture" of their lives: How am I doing personally? How can I continue to grow in my faith? What are some things I could change about my life that would be beneficial to me? FinishingWell endeavors to assist men in such issues as these.
Today there are an abundance of gurus, coaches, and other self-proclaimed self-help "professionals" who promise to help people realize their dreams. Unfortunately, in many cases, they offer much more than they can deliver, and frequently leave out the spiritual dimension of life. I believe that our ability to grow, prosper, mature, and yes, achieve many of our aspirations, cannot ignore the spiritual dimension of life.
However, FinishingWell is not a "cookie-cutter" approach, but rather is tailor-made for each man. While most of the men that I work with reside in the Atlanta area, a growing number of men outside of Atlanta, and in neighboring states, are now participating in FinishingWell. And while some of the men that I work with simply want to get my regular advice or counsel on various personal, family, or work issues, other men desire a more proactive approach to personal growth. In those cases, we discuss your interests and challenges, and design a strategy to reach your goals. Areas of discussion might include gaining a better understanding of the Christian life, cultivating your devotional life, as well as getting a clearer grasp of your calling, giftedness, and purpose that God has for your life.
Through periodic meetings that are convenient and fit your schedule (and phone conversations when you are out of town or unavailable), these are five of the primary benefits of FinishingWell:
My committed to men might best be summed up under four words, which can be remembered by the acronym, LACE.
Listen… to hear your hopes and aspirations, and the challenges you are facing, all held with strict confidentiality.
Advise…you realistically, sharing my ideas, taking into account all the factors involved.
Candor…speaking truthfully to you, without criticizing or berating you.
Encouragement…encouraging and challenging you to do more than you would do on your own.
I've come to believe that anything that has value costs us something. As the men that I work with work hard for their income, by the same token, I am committed to work diligently in serving them. I want the men that I work with to give enough that it matters. The issue of financial support is generally covered early on in the process of working together.
Because FinishingWell is a personal and unique service, it is hard to describe in a few pages how you might benefit. Why not contact me so we can explore how this service could enhance and improve your life?
